SNCBC are currently contracted by Sunderland City Council, Youth Development Group to deliver youth work in the Shiney Row Ward. Our most recent development is the re-launching of Penshaw Youth Club.
Penshaw youth club currently runs every Friday evening from 6.30pm until 8.30pm for young people aged between 13 and 19 years old. The project takes place in the community association building and although still in its early days it is currently attracting up to 60 young people each week.
The project was re-launched in October following consultation with young people gathering in the area and attending the XL youth village on Herrington Country Park. The outcome of that consultation highlighted that young people were crying out for youth provision in the Penshaw area and were particularly keen for that provision to contain their main interest, music.
Music is the main event in the project each Friday and young people take the opportunity to showcase their DJ and MC skills on the Decks whilst other young people watch and provide encouragement. The young people very much lead on this element of the project and are committed to arriving early to help set the equipment up and support other young people by teaching them how to DJ and MC.
Other activities include pool and games consoles and we are currently fundraising to be able to provide other activities
Drinks and toasties are regularly available for young people and these are very popular particularly as the weather gets colder.
We are very keen for the young people to inform the programme within the project and continuous consultation takes place with them to deliver a programme that is not only user friendly but is designed by young people for young people.
