In September 2009 Penshaw Community Association held their first Scarecrow Trail with the intention of providing a fun day for the whole family at minimal expense and donating any money raised to local charities.
It was supported by the whole of the community and scarecrows were made and displayed all round the village, along the main road and in Herrington Country Park. Many residents contributed scarecrows together with local primary schools, old peoples’ homes, the church, pubs, local businesses and Country Park staff. Each exhibit was highly individual and distinctly memorable.
Delicious homemade refreshments were available in the Village Hall provided by the Women’s Institute and a selection of classical and modern organ music was played in the Grade II listed, All Saints church in Penshaw Village.
The Equestrian Centre arranged pony rides for the youngsters. The day was rounded off by a ceilidh in the Community Centre Hall which was packed to capacity with adults and children and proved a wonderful end to an enjoyable day.
The event was so successful that it was repeated in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
and 2014 with even more scarecrows and this year again included a steel band and Mr Balloon Man.
This year's event will be on Saturday 17th September, 2016. More details later.
This event is supported by Sunderland City Council and Gentoo.
